38th ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY....

NEWARK PRESERVATION and
LANDMARKS COMMITTEE's

38th Annual Awards Ceremony
at The Button Factory

A beautiful 133 year old four story brick building
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Honoree: Newark History Society:
Founded exactly 10 years ago by Timothy Crist, Warren Grover, and Charles Cummings, this small group has grown rapidly and spread much knowledge and enthusiasm. Its more than 40 forums have drawn standing-room-only audiences with topics from Puritans to gangsters. And it has organized an Archives Project to identify and inventory the many sources of printed materials and documents about Newark’s fascinating past. This award was created after the 2005 death of Charles Cummings, Newark’s first city historian.

Honoree: The Button Factory:
Erected in 1879 as the Barrett-Brown Building, this four-storey brick structure housed a button manufacturer for 40 years, and then a tool factory for nearly a century. In 2008 it  was bought by investors including architect Hal Laessig and  his wife, artist Yoland Skeete, who had lost their house and gallery for new arena on Mulberry Street. At an investment of $3 million, the group created 17 residential condos, some with studios and offices. and sold 14 in 6 months. Old floors, beams, 10-foot ceilings, and even some original  equipment were blended with modern interiors. The Dust Award honors the man who founded our committee in 1973.

Admission $10 for NPLC member, $15 for all others, children $5, with accompanying adult.

38th Annual Member's Meeting

A beautiful 19th century brownstone
12 noon until 2 p.m. at 1091 Broad St., Newark, NJ
On the southwest corner of South Street

COME OUT: For the 38th year in a row, We invite all our members to find out what we've been doing and what we’re planning to preserve and promote the best of Newark past. Take part in two hours of lively discussion in a restored mansion near Lincoln Park.

Our hoard of trustees will conduct a brief actual meeting, chaired by President Liz Del Tufo. Trustees will review current projects, including nomination of a half«dozen public schools for the National Register. We’ll also begin plans for our annual awards this May, when we’ll honor groups and individuals for efforts in the cause of preservation.

SEE AND HEAR! Our honored guest, Dr. Clement Alexander Price, one of New Jersey’s foremost historians, will talk about his work as vice chair of the National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. He was appointed to the panel by President Obama last August. At Rutgers, he is distinguished professor of history and director of the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience. In 2008 he received NPLC's Charles Cummings Award.

VOTE AND SPEAK! All members who are paid through 2011 can elect 8 of the 18 trustees for NPLC’s governing board. And everyone at the meeting can voice their comments and questions about our activities, including efforts to save the threatened 1720 Plume House and the 1837 Essex County jail. Light refreshments will be available for a $5 donation to Integrity, our host. Paid parking available on nearby streets and lots. Explore the two houses rebuilt into Williams Academy by Integrity.
